Corporate travellers switching to serviced accommodation
August 2009
With our head office (also the site of our most popular apartment building, ‘the Corporation Buildings’) being in such close proximity to the legal quarter in Sheffield’s town centre, we are beginning to see the emergence of a market we knew existed, but which we had thus far been unable to tap into. We had a smattering of business guests, particularly those that worked in the legal sector but we are now seeing a shift to serviced accommodation from the more traditional hotel stay.
When we market our business to companies, the details usually go to the front desk or travel expense department. Much of this information, I would imagine is discarded. It is only natural that they will book where they booked last time because it’s easy and they don’t have to waste time phoning different hotels to get the best price. After all time is money right? Well what we have found with our business guests is that they have a strong tendency to return after the first time.
The comment cards we leave for guests generally have the same tone, along the lines of, “felt more private”, “felt like my own place”, “great having the facility to cook a proper meal”, “great value for money”. Our town premises are directly over the road from one of the larger chain hotels, a tough ask for any new operator to compete with, and it has been a struggle, but now we are finding hotel guests popping into the office as they pass by. It also seems our repeat business guests are having an influence on their colleagues who are giving us a go.
With a diverse mix of itinerant business people, legal professionals, trainees and company reps staying with us, we hope we can improve our service and facilities to accommodate more specifically, the business traveler and their particular needs. We do read all our comments cards and this allows us to tailor make our service but also to plan where and what form our future building projects will take. Watch this space!
